Idris A.S. – Knowledge, Skill, and the Heights of the Sky

In human history, there are some personalities mentioned in the Qur’an who remain examples forever. Prophet Idris (peace be upon him) is one of those great Prophets. Allah Almighty granted him knowledge, wisdom, and devotion, and by His grace, raised him to the heavens.

Mention in the Qur’an

Allah Almighty says in Surah Maryam:

“And mention in the Book, Idris; indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a high station.”
 Qur’an – Surah Maryam (19:56-57)


“And [mention] Ishmael, Idris, and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient.”
 Qur’an – Surah Al-Anbiya (21:85)

These verses show that Prophet Idris (A.S.) was a truthful Prophet, patient, and blessed with a lofty status by Allah Almighty.

Lineage and Identity

According to Tafseer Ibn Kathir, the original name of Prophet Idris (A.S.) was Akhnukh. He was from the descendants of Prophet Sheeth (A.S.), the son of Prophet Adam (A.S.). This means Idris (A.S.) was the great-grandson of Adam (A.S.).

Knowledge and Skills

Prophet Idris (A.S.) was granted a special status in knowledge by Allah:
